STRESS OF EXAMS
April 18, 2016
by Tatyana Payne
Are you stressed due to upcoming exams? We've all experienced stress. Stress is very natural. Remember, stress exists for a reason and you can choose to let it be your downfall or use it to drive you to improve your work.
Here are a few tips to help you with stress:
-
Don't cram: Studying the night before an exam causes stress in your body to increase. Cramming can also lead to headaches.
-
Use your time wisely: You should study a couple of days before an exam. Studying days before an exam can cause you not to be so stressed. When studying you should take mini breaks.
-
Do something you like: Watching TV, reading a book, or even painting can ease your stress. Find things you enjoy doing to get your mind stress-free.
-
Eat breakfast the day of the exam: Eating a healthy breakfast the day of an exam can help you. Make sure it is nutritious! It can help you have more energy while testing.
-
Get a good night’s sleep: You should go to sleep early so you will be fully rested. Not getting enough sleep will drastically reduce your ability to retain information. You would be too focused on staying up.
I hope these tips help you ace your test and also not be stressed!!
PEER POWER
April 18, 2016
by Brittany M. Luckett
Tigers, have you recently noticed the extra teachers in your English classes and any other class you may have? Or maybe you have seen them walking around in the hallway. If you didn't know already, they are instructors from a program called Peer Power.
What is Peer Power, you ask? Peer Power is a non-profit organization that recruits and trains high-performing students to tutor and mentor their peers, encourages active learning, values education, and are personally accountable for the students' futures.
Peer Power has tutoring sessions every Wednesday at our school from 2:30 to 4:40. It is a great way to help you study if you want to get an excellent score on the ACT. Peer Power is a good idea for students and most definitely for seniors. Deyana Jubert, a student at Whitehaven High says, "It's helpful to see what to expect on the ACT and problems you may get wrong, Peer Power lets you learn from your mistakes. I'll do better when I have to take the real test, so I find that quite helpful."
Students of Whitehaven, this is an awesome opportunity for you to take hold of. If you haven't been to one of the tutoring sessions on Wednesday afternoons, you're really missing out on a learning experience.

KEY CLUB MEMBERS MEET STATE REPRESENTATIVES
April 18, 2016
by Tatyana Payne
Hey, Whitehaven High Tiger Family, did you know that a few of our fellow classmates visited Nashville to meet our State Representatives?
On January 27, 2016, selected Key Club members visited the state capital of Nashville, TN. The trip was planned by Mr. Calvin Burton, a known member of the Whitehaven community. Mr. Calvin Burton is the President of the Kiwanis Club for the Whitehaven area. Mr. Burton is also a WHS Alumni.
The students were carefully selected by the Key Club sponsor. Mrs. Tiffany Wren. The chosen students were Kayla Clark, VP of the Key Club; Carolyn Beverly, Brianna Jackson, Micah Gamble, Darian Norfleet, and Joshua Spencer.
"What I was looking for as I searched for the perfect candidates to represent Whitehaven High School's Key Club were students who were highly intelligent and who would strongly represent our organization. These students had to be those who really love to serve their community!" says Mrs. Tiffany Wren.
The purpose of the trip was to allow our Key Club members to meet representatives of the State and to learn more about our government. Each member witnessed a session that informed them of what each of our representatives do as a whole. After the student observed them on duty, the students were given an opportunity to sit in the seat of these highly prestigious people and mimic their daily activities.
Finally, one of our Key Club members, Micah Gamble, received recognition from Karen Camper. Karen Camper is a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives.
UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS 2016 HONOR CHOIR
April 18, 2016
by Jennifer Hawkins
On Thursday, January 28, and Friday, January 29, eight of our fellow Tigers got the privilege to participate in the first annual University of Memphis Honor Choir, coordinated by the university's very own Assistant Professor of Music Education and Associate Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Ryan Fisher, which was composed of eighty students from ten different high schools in the Memphis area.
Our Tigers that personally participated were sopranos Jennifer Hawkins, which is myself, a senior, and Jayla Funches, a junior; altos Teresiah Hayslett, a senior, and Amber Sanders, a sophomore; tenors Lonnie Graham, a sophomore, and Timothy Felix, a sophomore; and basses Nicholas Saulsberry, a senior, and Charles Hopson, a junior.
The students had the privilege of working under the instruction of Tesfa Wondemagegnehu, conductor of The Radio Choir and manager of the Choral Works Intiative from American Public Media, who actually originates from Memphis, TN, and Jake Runestad, an award-winning composer from Rockford, IL, who served as the composer coach and co-conductor.
Under the guidance of Jake Runestad, the Honor Choir was able to compose their own original piece entitled "One Voice," which can be found above. Overall, the Honor Choir was a huge success, so any interested Tigers who participate in our school's Concert Choir should look forward to going next year!

EXERCISE AND HEALTHY EATING
April 18, 2016

Exercise
One problem many people in today’s society face is having motivation to exercise on a regular basis. Consistently exercising seems like an insurmountable obstacle. What most people don’t realize is how beneficial it could be for our mind, body and soul. Not only can exercising help with our weight but it also tones our muscles, boosts our metabolism, relieves stress as well as makes us an overall happier person. The best time to exercise is early in the morning although this seems to be the hardest time to think about exerting any physical activity. Exercising in the morning can help you focus for the rest of the day, can keep you energized for the day, your mood will improve, your metabolism will get a quick
morning boost to help burn calories throughout the day, it will increase your likelihood of keeping a consistent routine, it will help you get a more restful and refreshing sleep and it also helps get rid of
cravings.
Healthy Eating
Staying away from fatty foods can also be a really daunting task. Although these unhealthy foods taste great, eating right is essential to being the best person you can be. Many people do not eat breakfast within an hour of waking up. This could make them very hungry and more likely to eat the
wrong things. It is important to not go too long without food in order to prevent unhealthy cravings. The USDA created a My Plate chart to demonstrate the right portions of the right things to eat on a daily
basis. This chart consists of at least of cup of dairy, a big helping of dark green vegetables, a smaller helping of a variety of fruits, about ¾ of the plate with grains, and the remainder filled with proteins.
Orange veggies are also a great choice. Dairy should be low-fat or fat-free. Fruit is best when it is fresh, frozen, canned or dried. Look for the word “whole” when searching for which grains to buy. Be sure to
buy more lean or low-fat meats and poultry. Do you think you are capable of eating healthy?

RACISM
February 26, 2016
by Jaleyah Shaw
“Now we are able to vote, sit where we want in restaurants, and sit in the front of the bus. Here in America, tension that’s embedded within the social conscious of our society still exists today.” These are the words of Michael King, Whitehaven High, Peer Power instructor. Though African Americans are “free”, they are still ridiculed, judged, slandered (mostly by Stereotypes), and discriminated simply because of their ethnic background.
It must be pointed out that this doesn’t only happen with African Americans. It seems as though other races have been mocked to some extent at the hand of folks of different races, also. Other minorities have suffered from ridiculous acts of injustice, too. Many African Americans reflect on slavery, rapes, senseless lynching and murders and how it was hard and how it ruined many people.
But think about it, the Holocaust occurred and Jewish nationalities endured horrible inhumane treatment, also. African Americans say that the race should be celebrated and not ignored. This is true. It is good that we celebrate African American achievements during Black History Month. But, remember, other races have gone through negative treatments, yet we all made it. Racism is everywhere, and it can happen to almost anybody anywhere.
However, racism can be ‘stopped’, if we follow the ‘Golden Rule’, that simply says we must ‘Treat Others as We Want to be Treated”.

SCHOOL FASHIONS
February 29, 2016
by Deyana L. Jubert
Bonjour Tigers, yes yes!! Tis’ the season for ever changing leaves, empty trees, and long sleeve. Here is sneak peek at what’s hot this fall season. So, girls and guys keep an open eye to what’s in style...
What seems to be popular this fall season for ladies is a mix between fedoras, boots, and scarfs...
*The scarfs come and many colors, styles, and designs. Ladies can find them just about anywhere, like Wal-Mart or Mad Rags, CitiTrends and stores like them in Southland Mall.
*You can also find your style of boots in stores around you at reasonable prices. Who says looking good for fall has to cost an arm and a leg? Especially with SALES hitting left and right!
Whitehaven High students are bringing those cozy and oh so cute Ugg Boots back ready for the season change. We all know Ugg boots are our go to shoes, especially when it starts to get cold out. They literally can go with just about anything we wear and leave an individual style. They can go with a skirt, your favorite pair of jeans, a short dress, or whatever you may feel like wearing.
And with today’s fashion, creative girls and women show their own personal taste by taking this fedora style from the men and rocking it ourselves...so watch out guys!!! It’s cute and can be mixed up with anyone’s style.
Fall Hairstyles for 2015
Now, “hair” girls, this is a little extra feature that we all think about when our outfits are so on point for fall. How can we forget about our hair?!! Now the best hairstyles for fall can go from "natural," box braids, curls, and etc. Try protective hairstyles to keep hair looking its best. You can go from braids, wild, fizzy curls, or quick simple short hairstyles that don’t take much time to manage. You can also just cover, wrap, or pin down and call it a night. Quick. Easy. Stylish.
Most women choose to go natural when this season comes around with just long lasting dreads or twists. No heat or constant maintenance needed.
The fashionable hairstyles pictured are known to give you the look you desire with your best outfits. They also keep your hair healthy and manageable for the cool and windy season this year.
Hopefully you like these designs. Fall is the time to go crazy, creative and make these styles yours. The newspaper staff is always ready to accept new, fun and fashion 2015 girls to be pictured online at the WHS Broadcaster!
Now for the guys
What’s popular with guys is the “classic man” mix with a big jacket.
*Guys trends today are to look clean, but stay warm at the same time.
Even a few familiar celebrities are breaking out from the old cache of big shirts and baggie pants these days. They are trying something a bit classier and laid back. Hey, what can we say? There’s nothing wrong with dressing to impress trying to look your best. Take some notes, fellows.
Popular rapper/singer, Fetty Wap is a fine example of how guys, this season, try to look good and stay warm at the same time. Fetty Wap is proudly rocking a simple grey fashionable jogging suit, plain white tee, gold chain, while finishing off his outfit with an original pair of men’s boots. And guys, this whole outfit can be found at local stores for reasonable prices.
Another famous R&B artist we all should recognize is Chris Brown. He is styling in a forest green army jacket, simple jewelry, with basic jeans. If you put this together the right way, it can stand you out in a crowd without a doubt!
Another familiar face, who changes his style up from just the basics is "Future." This guy that has no problem flashing his shiny bling, such as rings, watches, earrings, and of course a gold chain... Hmmm? Guys, I’m starting to see a trend that’s trying to come back around... Future seems to look good with just a black warm scarf and muscle shirt. Yeah, he could probably use a quick jacket. But maybe that’s your opportunity, fellows, to add your own personal style to the look. It could be edited easily with a jean jacket, leather jacket, suede coat, or a simple long sleeve thermal. It all depends on your individual style, switch it up how you like, it’s up to you!!
You can’t help but admire those guys out there throwing on their blazers and buttons downs and tilting their hats back to make a grander entrance...
ALRIGHT!!! WATCH OUT NEXT SEASON EVERYONE AS WE PRESENT WINTER FASHION AS AWESOME AS WE HAVE DONE WITH FALL 2K15!!!!
THANKS AGAIN FROM FASHION WRITER, “DEYANA L. JUBERT” & ALL OF THE NEWSPAPER STAFF.
