Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded on January 15th,
1908 by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle at Howard University
in Washington, DC. On the other hand, Delta Sigma
Theta was founded on January 13th, 1913 by 22
collegiate women also at Howard University in
Washington, DC. There are about 283,000 women
in the 992 AKA chapters around the world, while
there are 200,000 women in the 940 DST chapters
around the world. The symbol for DST members are
the elephant while the symbol for AKA members are
the frog. AKA’s motto is “By merit and by culture.”
DST’s motto is “Intelligence is the torch of wisdom.”
AKA requires prospective members to be enrolled in
school and maintain a C+ average. DST requires
prospective members to have a 2.75 GPA. Both
sororities have been going strong for over 100 years,
but there is one that is obviously better. I am all for
AKA and I hope to pledge at Spelman. I surveyed 12
people and 10 voted AKA while 2 voted DST, now
you tell me which one sounds the best to you?
